# Understanding medical anxiety

Does your child always get a stomach ache or headache the morning of a check-up? Do they ask “what if” questions about getting sick that never seem to end?

While it’s typical for kids to be a little nervous about vaccinations, seeing new doctors, or going to a new clinic, sometimes that worry grows into something bigger.

When a child or teen has extreme fear about doctors, needles, or getting sick, it might be more than just nerves. Doctors often call this medical anxiety “illness anxiety disorder” or a specific phobia called iatrophobia (fear of doctors).

## How medical anxiety feels in the body

*The brain and the body are closely linked. When a child is anxious, their fight-or-flight system kicks in, which can create very real physical symptoms.*

- **Stomach issues:** Nausea, butterflies, or sharp or dull aches, and a need to go to the bathroom more frequently
- **Racing heart:** Palpitations, high heart rate or blood pressure, flushed cheeks, and sweating or shaking
- **Sleep trouble:** Having a hard time falling or staying asleep because their mind is racing
- **Muscle tension:** Headaches, muscle stiffness, or shaking
- **Panic symptoms:** Difficulty breathing, a feeling of impending doom, or feeling lightheaded or dizzy when talking about medical topics

## How medical anxiety feels emotionally

*Medical anxiety is not just about being shy in a new environment. It is a persistent, consistent weight that makes a child feel like they are in danger even when they are safe. Kids with this disorder often feel a loss of control.*

- **Worrying constantly: **They might spend hours thinking about germs or diseases
- **Seeking reassurance:** They may ask you dozens of times, “Am I okay?” or “Are you sure I’m not sick?”
- **Feeling irritable:** Anxiety and a feeling of being overwhelmed in teenagers often comes across as anger, outbursts, irritability, or moodiness
- **Avoidance: **Your child or teen might try to skip school or refuse to go into a clinic building

## What you can do as a parent

- [How does Brightline treat medical anxiety?](/what-we-treat/anxiety/universal-treatment/)

If this sounds like something your child is experiencing, the most important thing for you to know as their parent is that they aren't “faking it” to get out of things. You know they’re safe, but their body is having a real reaction to something it perceives as a threat.

Medical anxiety is treatable, just like most anxiety disorders. Therapy helps kids learn that their scary thoughts are just thoughts, not facts. They learn how to face their fears in small, brave steps.

By paying attention to these signs and surrounding your child with the support they need, you can help them feel more in charge of their health and less afraid of the world around them. Remember, you don't have to handle this alone — talking to their pediatrician or a therapist is a great place to start.
